Lopez, Robert and Irving W. Raymond. Medieval Trade in the Mediterranean World. New York. Columbia University Press. 1990.
During the Commercial Revolution Western merchants grew more exact and expert in distinguishing kinds and grades. They used the term 'spices' in a more
and more general sense, so that it covered practically all types of dyestuffs, textile fibers, and other raw materials from the Orient and Africa.
Furthermore, in the loose speech of many merchants, 'spices' included many other wares which did not come from either the Orient or Africa and which
had nothing in common with the original group of aromatics described by that name. The other term, 'minute spices,' was adopted to indicate
specifically those wares which sold in small quantities at high prices. The list in Pegolotti's manual of commercial practice shows both the increasing
diversification of spices proper as they were sold in Western markets and the growth of the term to encompass a much wider variety of goods than is
known today as 'spices.'
Names of spices at the beginning of the 14th Century; all those that have a dot (•) following them should be understood to be minute spices.
The following are the categories this spice list was broken down into:
