Fighting Orders

The Agrikan Fighting Orders of Hârn

Fighting Orders in Rethem:

Order of the Cohorts of Gashang
Interestingly, while its sponsoring clerical order, the order of the Eight Demons, is restricted to women then Cohorts of Gashang is open only to males. The headquarters of the order are at Themeson. The order's formal name is the "Cohorts of Gashang the Emperor of Flame", but this is seldom use. The Cohorts of Gashang are the result of the same theological/political disputes that created their sponsoring clerical order; in the case of the Cohorts of Gashang they split from their parent fighting order the Red Shadows of Herpa; in so doing they also took Themeson keep with them. The Haragki and Laumak of the order often deliver captives to the tender mercies of its parental clerical order in Golotha, Shiran and Coranan; most Hârnians tend to avoid them. The Akarata of the order is Crasel Merbed.
Order of the Eight Demons
One of two female clerical orders of the church of Agrik. The order is notorious for sexual-torture, mutilation and sacrifice of male captives acquired from its sponsored fighting order, the Cohorts of Gashang. The order was established in 714 when it split from the order of Herpa the Mace. The mother house of the order is located in Shiran; other temples are at Coranan ad Golotha.

Holdings of the Cohorts of Gashang:

Themeson

Themeson was held by the Thardic Republic until 708 when it was seized by the Red Shadows of Herpa. A dispute within the church resulted in the creation of a new clerical order, the Eight Demons, and their sponsoring fighting order, the Cohorts of Gashang, seized the keep in 714. The Eight Demons, headquartered in Shiran, holds extensive lands in the region. The Cohorts of Gashang have not sworn fealty to Chafin III and may intend to return Themeson to the Thardic Republic.

Order of the Company of the Copper Hook
Established in 623 under the sponsorship of the clerical order of the Fuming Gate. After several decades of aimless pillage and poverty the order swore fealty to King Arlun of Rethem in 641 and were granted lands by King Nemiran in 681. The next year the order used its bases at Menekod, Hyen, Dunir and Selvos to launch an attack on the Kandian keep at Imiden; thus starting a fifteen year conflict that was to be named Ezar's War after their Akarata. With the defeat of Rethem and the Peace of Selvos in 697 the lands of the Company of the Copper Hook have been reduced to Hyen keep. The order has never recognized the Peace of Selvos and has continued to skirmish against Kandian units for the last 23 years. The Akarata of the order is Marag Yeredar, a fifty-two year old man whose sad and depressed demeanor belies a clever and scheming mind.
Order of the Fuming Gate
A clerical order of the church of Agrik which sponsors the fighting order of the Company of the Copper Hook. The Fuming Gate's only major temple is in Golotha. Since Ezar's War and the fiascos suffered therein by the Copper Hook, the order has been in steady decline. It is doubtful that the Golotha headquarters hold more than a dozen priests.

Holdings of the Copper Hook:

Hyen

Hyen keep was built in 532 as a Corani legion fortress. In 681 King Nemiran granted it, together with Menekod, Dunir and Selvos, to the order of the Copper Hook. In 682 the order provoked Ezar's War (682-697) by attacking Kanday, eventually losing all possessions except Hyen. The Copper Hook has never recognized the peace ending the war and continues to skirmish with the Laranian fighting order, the Checkered Shield. The Earl of Tormau has been supplying money through intermediaries to the order so it may continue its "war" with the Laranians. The Akarata may not be aware of the true source of this aid.

Order of the Red Shadows of Herpa
The order is headquartered at Menekai in the kingdom of Rethem. Like its sponsoring clerical order it favors a "holy" crusade against the rest of Hârn. The order was granted its lands in 681. In 708 it sent a force across the Gomisen and seized Themeson keep from the Thardic Republic. However, when a faction broke away to become the order of the Cohorts of Gashang in 714 they took Themeson for their own. The Red Shadows are currently attempting to exterminate the Kubora tribesmen of Peran. In keeping with their policy of spreading-by-the-sward the word of Agrik, the order supports Chafin III, who is seen as a leader who might be able to unify Rethem and lead the crusade they favor. The Akarata of the order is Larga Gydsilen, a coarse and brutish thug.
Order of Herpa the Mace
A clerical order of the church of Agrik which sponsors the fighting order of the Red Shadows of Herpa. This is the most mystical of Agrik's orders; it involves itself in politics, favoring an (evil temple) crusade against the rest of Hârn. Its main temple is in Golotha and it maintains a secret temple in Coranan which is engaged in subversion. In 714 a faction broke off to form the Order of the Eight Demons.

Holdings of the Red Shadows:

Menekai

The original fortification at Menekai was a small Corani legion outpost. After years of neglect following the demise of the Empire it came under the control of the Coranan Republic, one of the partners of the Thardic League, in 621 but was annexed by Arlun of Rethem in 639. Nemiran granted the fief to the order of the Red Shadows of Herpa in 681 who then constructed a castle on the site.

Order of the Warriors of Mamaka
The order has its headquarters at Bedenes keep on Rethem's northern border and periodically crusades against the Kuboran tribes of Peran. The primary ambition of the Warriors of Mamaka is to re-establish a keep at the ruins of Kustan. Bedenes was allegedly granted to the order by King Nemiran of Rethem, although no record exists. It is more likely that the order seized the district from its legal holder around 690 when the kings of Rethem were involved in a war with Kanday; the keep itself dates from 699. The Akarata of the order is Horab Gerund, a violent sensualist.
Order of Mamaka the Master of Steel
The supreme clerical sect of the church of Agrik and the sponsor of the fighting order, The Warriors of Mamaka. The order's only temple is in Golotha and this house is the seat of the Primate for Hârn. who, for the past three decades, has been the grandmaster of the Order of Mamaka the Master of Steel. The present grandmaster and primate is chairman of the heptarchy of the city of Golotha; his name is Klyrdes Bisidril. While he claims decent from the alleged bastard daughter of the Prophet Balsha, his philosophical leanings are more conservative than were the prophet's. The main problem for the primate of Agrik has remained the same throughout history; keeping the various orders from tearing each other apart. Klyrdes, in 717, orchestrated the last in a series of "temple wars" wherein the temple of the Order of the Pillar of Fire in Golotha, along with most of the priest thereof, was razed "mysteriously". The near total destruction of an entire sect did, of course, merit the "sincere condolences" of the primate. Such wars are carried on in secret, are never acknowledged, and will hardly be apparent to bystanders; but hardly a month goes by without some fatalities.

Holdings of the Warriors of Mamaka:

Bedenes

The keep was built in 699, allegedly on land granted to the Warriors of Mamaka by King Nemiran; although no legal title seems to exist. It is more likely the order seized the land from its legal holder during the turmoil caused by Ezar's War and King Puril's death.

Order of the Companions of Roving Doom
The order was established in 604 and helped Arlun the Barbarian to establish the kingdom of Rethem. The order's house is Arketh, in the kingdom of Rethem, from where Haragki of the order sally forth to commit acts of brutality and intimidation. The kings of Rethem have traditionally employed the order to "lean on trouble-makers", enchanted, bo doubt, by their efficiency. Since the virtual destruction of the sponsoring clerical order in 717, the Companions of the Roving Doom have effectively become an independent body. The Akarata of the order is Bremel Kawaran.
Order of the Pillar of Fire
The male, clerical sect of the church of Agrik which sponsors the Order of the Companions of Roving Doom. The order's only temple, with most of its members inside, was razed during a "temple war" with the primate, Klyrdes Bisidril, in 717. No more than a few dozen priest of the order survived. The few clerics left are in hiding. Their temple, perhaps coven is a better word, moves secretly from one place to another. Priests of the order never reveal their identities to outsiders and will (attempt to) kill anyone who learns the temple's current location. The Pillar of Fire intends to assassinate the primate at the first opportunity to extract revenge for the temple massacre. It is generally accepted that the order, like other sects of the church of Agrik, was plotting to seize the primacy when it was purged. The Companions of Roving Doom have not demonstrated a high degree of loyalty since the crisis.

Holdings of the Roving Doom:

Arketh

The keep was built in 604 on the site of a ruined Corani Empire fortress by the Companions of Roving Doom, perhaps the most violent of Agrikan fighting orders. It is interesting to note that their sponsoring clerical order, the Pillar of Fire, has largely been exterminated as a result of internal conflict in the church; but the Companions remain powerful and active in Rethem affairs.

Fighting Orders in Orbaal:

Order of the Crimson Dancer
The only female fighting-order of the church of Agrik. Formerly based in Rethem, the order was banished as a "political liability" after Brenlyn Shernath, the young sister of Baliela, assassinated Queen Eriel of Kanday in 694. Baliela regards her sister, who was caught and executed, as a martyr and venerates her as a saint. There is a hostel of the order in Shiran but the isolated Orbaalese keep of Quimen has been the order's headquarters since 701 when it deemed it wise to leave Rethem. The order draws most of its recruits from martially inclined women of Orbaal who are disenchanted with an otherwise subservient role in society. The Akarata of the order is Baliela Shernath; a fifty-three year old who is a resilient and merciless survivor of temple intrigue and has considerable influence over Alegar II.
Order of Kukshin
One of the seven clerical sects of the church of Agrik and one of the two which admit only women. The Order of Kukshin sponsors the unique female fighting order, The Crimson Dancer. Both orders are of Thardic origin but now conduct most of their business in Orbaal. The order's only official temple is at Quimen in Orbaal.

Holdings of the Crimson Dancer:

Quimen

Quimen is held by the Agrikan order of the Crimson Dancer and is the only orderial fief in Orbaal. Located in an isolated, inland valley, Quimen was held by the Jarin clan Cysemet until 701 when it was seized by the order with the complicity of King Alegar II and the help of Ivinian mercenaries. All of the ruling clan, some sixty men, women and children were put to the sword. These brutal executions sparked the Jarin Rebellion of 701-03. Ironically, the rebellion had no substance at Quimen but created great difficulties for ruling Ivinian clans in other parts of Orbaal. The Jarin serfs at Quimen are probably the most oppressed in Orbaal. The walls of Quimen are usually "decorated" with the bodies of Jarin executed as "examples".

Landless Fighting Orders:

Order of the Demon Pameshlu the Insatiable
The order holds no lands, serving primarily as guards, gladiators, beast and/or slave masters and administrators for its parent body which operates the Pamesani. Akarata of the order is Tonwersa Klaib.
Order of the Octagonal Pit
One of seven clerical sects of the church of Agrik and the sponsor of the, so called, fighting order of Demon Pameshlu the Insatiable. Both orders are almost solely concerned with the operation of the Pamesani (games) in Golotha, Shiran and Coranan. The headquarters are at Golotha.
